Tree of the Month
The Gardens are home to a fine collection of trees, including many rare species. However, we thought we might start this series with our National Tree, the English Oak or Quercus robur. Groves of such trees were sacred to the Druids long before the Romans arrived in these islands about 2000 years ago, and the word Druid may well derive from the Gaelic for oak, and mean “men of the oaks.” Subsequently, for centuries they provided the “heart of oak” of which the navy’s ships were built in the age of sail. Individually, perhaps the most famous oak is the “Royal Oak” at Boscobel House in Shropshire, in which King Charles II hid after the Battle of Worcester in 1651, and which is commemorated to this day in the name of numerous pubs, including one in Didsbury Village.
The specimen shown is number 20 on our Tree Trail, and is situated to the right of the path leading from the round bed in the centre of the gardens roughly northward towards the shelter.
