Trees of the Month: 29. Common and Japanese Larches
Larches are unusual in that they are deciduous conifers which, as well as being handsome trees in summer, provide attractive autumn colour which often persists into winter,. There are two in the gardens: the Common or European Larch (Larix decidua), which was first introduced to Briain in 1639; and, more rarely seen in gardens, the Japanese Larch (Larix kaempferi), introduced in 1861.The two trees are similar in appearance, although the common larch has a more upright shape. It is on the inside of the path from the lodge to the shelter, half-way along, while the Japanese larch stands in the centre of the lawn in front of the lodge.
